He may be considered one of the biggest athletes in the world, but even that couldn’t stop him from being caught for tax fraud. Lionel Messi and his father were both sentenced up to 21 months in prison and both fined over 1.5 million dollars each. Under Spanish law however, they will not have to serve in prison due to the sentence being shorter than two years. It all started when Messi and his father were accused of defrauding the Spanish authorities in the years of 2007, 2008 and 2009. They failed to pay taxes on image rights and they are certainly paying for it now. Luckily for them, somehow they will avoid the entire prison sentence and won’t have to spend a day in jail.

Messi and his father have the right to appeal the sentence, but at this point, would it even make sense for them to do so? They wont have to serve jail time and only pay a few million dollars, which to some sounds like a lot of cash, but to Messi it is probably chump change. Messi recently announced his retirement from his national team Argentina, but don’t expect that to stick. He is only 29 years old and is in the prime of his career, there is no way he is ready to walk away from all that. For now Messi, will have to deal with this messy tax situation.
